IBM Power S1122 (9824-22A)
A dense, dual-socket 2U scale-out server offering up to 60 Power 11 cores and 4 TB of DDR5 memory, IBM's mainstream choice for growing IBM i, AIX, and Linux environments.
The 9824-22A is the machine type of the IBM Power S1122, the two-socket 2U workhorse of the Power 11 scale-out line. It has the widest processor range of any Power 11 machine type: five feature codes covering everything from a 4-core entry single-chip module to a 60-core dual-chip build, all in the same 2U chassis and all at software tier P10.
That flat P10 tier is the reason this machine type matters commercially. On the S1124 above it, adding cores can push the system from P20 into P30 and change the software bill permanently. On the 9824-22A it does not. You can scale from 4 cores to 60 without a tier change, which makes it the safest Power 11 machine type to buy with headroom you have not yet grown into.

How to confirm you have a 9824-22A
From IBM i
DSPSYSVAL QMODEL returns the model portion and DSPSYSVAL QPRCFEAT returns the processor feature code. Together those two values identify a 9824-22A build exactly, which is more than the S1122 name alone tells a vendor.
From AIX, Linux or VIOS
lsconf reports the machine type and model on the first lines of output. prtconf gives the same alongside processor implementation and clock speed.
From the HMC
Managed system properties shows the machine type-model and serial together, plus installed against activated cores. This is the view to screenshot when requesting a quote.
From the bezel
The 9824-22A is a full-width 2U chassis, distinguishing it from the half-width 9242-21B. The machine type-model and serial are on the front label.

What does the IBM Power S1122 cost?
Data Tech Computer posts an eight-core S1122 at $86,950, the same system with 50 users and an LTO9 drive at $116,950, and a maximum build with 1 TB of memory and unlimited users at $650,000.
The hardware is the cheap part. The S1122 example builds in Midland Information Systems' Power 11 pricing article put two four-core processors with 128 GB and 1.6 TB of flash at $33,304 in every one of eight rows, and the totals still run from $40,826 for one AIX partition to $219,743 for four IBM i partitions with unlimited users. Same hardware. The software line did all of that.

What the software adds
IT Jungle priced the IBM i subscription for eight P10 cores on the S1122 at $46,027 over three years, using IBM's configurator.
Midland's rows show the same thing from the other direction: the software line is bigger than the hardware line on every IBM i build with more than ten users. Midland also lists 24x7 Advanced Expert Care at $865.90 on top.

What is the difference between the Power S1122 and S1124?
Both share the 9824 machine-type family and a similar 60-core ceiling, but the S1124's EP3X/EP3H/EP3Y processor options deliver roughly 3.5x to 10x higher CPW than equivalent S1122 core counts, at the cost of stepping up into the P20 or P30 IBM i software tier instead of the S1122's P10. The S1124 also supports double the memory (8 TB vs 4 TB) and internal storage (244.8 TB vs 122.4 TB).
What is the difference between S-series and L-series Power 11 models?
S-series (S1112, S1122, S1124) and L-series (L1122, L1124) models share nearly identical hardware, but carry different machine-type licensing. L-series machines are Linux and Red Hat OpenShift-first, with IBM i and AIX capped at roughly 25% of activated cores. If your workload is primarily IBM i or AIX, choose the equivalent S-series model instead.
